Review｜Shell Teamwork Lynk & Co Racing sweeps Zhuzhou season opener
Shell Teamwork Lynk & Co Racing swept TCR Asia season opener at Zhuzhou International Circuit as reigning champion Zhang Zhiqiang dominated Race 1 and Sunny Wong won Race 2.
After the morning rain, Race 1 started on a damp track, but most drivers put on slicks. Pole sitter Zhang Zhiqiang quickly established his advantage from teammates David Zhu and Sunny Wong.
MG XPOWER driver Martin Cao who opted for different tyre strategy, with slicks in front and wets at rear of his brand new MG5 XPOWER TCR, gained lots of positions at the early stage. He made up his way to second position after overtook Sunny Wong and David Zhu.
Nonetheless, Zhang Zhiqiang was too far away from Martin Cao then with the asphalt drying up, the MG XPOWER driver was losing speed slowly.
Zhang Zhiqiang took the checkered flag by a massive margin that near a half-minute, Martin Cao kept second and Sunny Wong completed the podium.
At Race 2, the track was getting even more wet. Zhang Zhiqiang and Sunny Wong made quick progress from the reversed grid, they already took 1-2 for the team by the end of Lap 3, while another potentially podium contender David Zhu was caught up by first corner incident.
Zhang Zhiqiang led all the way till last lap, when Sunny Wong made his move and snatched the lead from his teammate. Sunny Wong won the race by only 1.493s and its his first win with the Lynk & Co 03 TCR. Zhang Zhiqiang was the runner-up and Am class winner Yan Chuang from FANCY took third as Lynk & Co went 1-2-3.
David Zhu and Rodolfo Avila shares victories in Zhuzhou Round 2
Shell Teamwork Lynk & Co Racing driver David Zhu and MG XPOWER driver Rodolfo Avila shared victories in TCR Asia Round 2 at Zhuzhou International Circuit.
David Zhu became third winner of the season in an incident-packed Zhuzhou International Circuit. It means all of the 3 Shell Teamwork Lynk & Co Racing drivers have scored victories in opening 3 races of the 2022 season.
David Zhu controlled the race which was interrupted by safety car for three times, he managed to keep himself out of troubles. As the race finished under safety car, 326 Racing Team’s new Audi RS 3 LMS driven by Liu Zichen took second place and his teammate Chen Xiaoke who driving the similar car finished third.
Race 1 winner Zhang Zhiqiang abled to start from eleventh on the grid after the incident that almost destroyed his car during Qualifying sessions. One of the car didn’t notice Zhang’s car on a hot lap as it was swerving to warm up its tyres and took out ZHANG’s 03, with the car suffering severe rear damage. The team managed to repair ZHANG’s car overnight so he could make a great comeback race to finish fifth.
In final race of the weekend we saw Rodolfo Avila started form pole and Sunny Wong started from another position of the front row. Sunny Wong challenged the leader Rodolfo Avila at Turn 1 but soon his attack didn’t pay off.
Rodolfo Avila reclaimed the lead and tried to pull away, till a incident that triggered the safety car. But Rodolfo Avila still dominated the remaining race and gave the first win for the brand new MG5 XPOWER TCR. Sunny Wong backed to podium with a second and David Zhu finished third.
After a near two-month break, TCR Asia Round 3 takes place on September 16-18 at Shanghai International Circuit.
